Gibraltar to Ibiza

Gibraltar gave us our first taste of the hot winds of the Mediterranean and was an exciting place to explore with heaps of nice people so it was hard to leave.

With a gap in the prevailing easterly wind known locally as the Leventa we left port and headed into the Med proper for what would be a 3 night 700km sail. With the deep ocean swells of the Atlantic behind us we had a very smooth sail. Almost immediately the water became a deep blue and for the first time we could do our night shifts in t-shirts and shorts. The dolphins were there as always but we also entertained by sail fish leaping from the air, huge turtles and sharks.

We were originally aiming for The inland sea, Mar Menor but with another weather change forecast we decided to push on to The Baleraris and get our first taste of the islands.

This was also the first leg where Taylor took her turn at night shift and Celene was the “Standby” having to sleep all kitted up and tethered to the coach on the cockpit so as she could assit with any of the late night sail work.

We timed the approach so as we would reach the islands just after dawn to minimize the risk of hitting any of the semi submerged rocks as we searched for a suitable anchorage.

  1. Well the Balearic Islands sound pretty good but I know you will all be very jealous when I tell you that Sefton Court is having the annual ‘junk’ drive! Have already scored some great stuff. Now where would you rather be?

    • Oh Helen – you know I always have so much to offer the junk drive lol I’m just glad the girls will miss it this year they always bring more home than I throw out. It is rather good here I have to say!

  2. Sounds exciting. Looking forward to hearing from the girls soon. Kaleb and I are supervising Fraser with his study (yeah sure). We cleaned out some junk in the garage and enjoyed a sleep in the sun.

  3. So happy that you are having some nice weather. Hoping to get a reply from John, did he get my email ? leaving on Fr.2/9.Luv P’n’R
